Paradise Lost
How Social Media Has Fallen
Social Media. Its inception was caused due to the desire for connection and unity among people. Platforms like MySpace, Facebook, Instagram, etc, were all created to allow people from all over the globe to connect, meet each other, and share similar experiences, and ideologies. A place where people could feel welcome, accepted, and loved. A digital utopia with unlimited possibilities.
Of course however, that was all too good to be true.
These platforms originally meant to connect, and unite people instantly became places filled with hate, selfish posts, and advertisements, all while people portrayed lives they are not actually living. Human nature, and selfish desires corrupted a once beautiful idea.
Does this story sound familiar? It should…
It’s the story of humanity.
Humans. They’re inception was caused by God’s desire for connection among humans and Himself. We were given a beautiful world, filled with gorgeous landscapes, oceans and animals, that we could take care of, and be united through. A place where people could worship God, love His creation, and love others, all while feeling loved and accepted. A perfect utopia.
Just like social media, it was too good to be true.
Because God did not want us loving Him merely because we were forced to, He gave us free will. The world, originally meant to be a paradise filled with love, instantly became sinful, corrupted, and evil, due to our selfish desires, and rebellion against God. The perfect world crumbled, as humans no longer loved each other, or the environment.
These two stories actually fit together. As humanity continues to destroy each other, and the beautiful world we were given, we have started to do so with social media. Just like how sin is the downfall of humanity, social media is the downfall of society. Suicide rates are at an all time high, and happiness is at all time low. Humanity is falling apart due to its own creation.
The sin that caused the corruption of humanity, is the same that caused the corruption of social media. We have been given a world, and social media platforms to express ourselves and love others, but instead choose to hate, and allow our own selfish desires to take control. And as humanity is beginning to take a step back and see how destructive and sad social media is…
I can’t even imagine the heartbreak God feels as He watches His own creation destroy itself.
